Nine in ten of the world's diamonds are polished within a few kilometres of our building. That concentration built a neighbourhood, and the neighbourhood carries the cost when the trade slows.
The slowdown problem
Small-goods manufacturing is seasonal. Demand drops, and in a trade organised around piece-rate work that drop lands entirely on the cutter. Where our order book allows it, we hold people on retained pay through slow weeks rather than releasing them and rehiring strangers in the autumn. It costs money. It also means we still have a floor that can hold a sortment when the work comes back.
Education
School fees are the expense that most reliably pushes a family to pull a teenager into work. We assist with fees for workers' children through secondary school, on application and without publicity attached to it.
What we do not claim
We are a manufacturer of modest size, not a foundation. We do not run programmes we cannot staff, and we would rather list four things we actually do than twelve we intend to.
